Recommendation Letters

How to Ask

If the recommendation is truly important, this should be shown to the person that is being asked to write the letter. Avoid email or calling a prospective recommender if possible and always try to meet the individual face to face. This will allow the recommender to know how much the recommendation means as well as allow an individual to decide if the prospective recommender is truly a good candidate. Judge the prospective recommender’s response both verbally and non-verbally to determine if a truly outstanding recommendation would be given by that individual. The chance that a great recommendation would be given usually depends on the nature of the relationship. In some instances, students are encouraged to waive their rights to read the letter written. This should always be taken advantage of as an opportunity to build credibility. It will also give the recommendation that is provided added weight because it signifies that an individual did not ask a number of people for recommendations and then selected the most positive. It shows confidence in the individual that was asked to give a recommendation and serves to show that individual that their high opinion is trusted and respected.

How to Proceed

Once a suitable recommender has been found there are certain steps that should be taken in order to insure a good recommendation. First, always give the recommender adequate time to write the letter. In most cases the letter of recommendation is tacked on at the end of applications but it should not be at the end of prospective students to do list. The best scenario is to secure a reputable recommender early in the process. Second, let the recommender know why they were chosen and provide them with any materials that could help them in their writing of the recommendation. Tell the recommender what aspect of personality or performance that they should focus on. Be available to meet with the recommender to answer any question or to give the recommender a better feel for strong qualities. Last, always remember to say thank you. This should be done in person if possible as well as in a hand written letter.
